I love free airport WiFi almost as much as I love my Sprint phone data service and EVDO card. These are necessary tools when you are trapped waiting for your plane which has been delayed coming out of the notariously overbooked Chicago airport system. At least I have my iTunes and a web browser to keep me company. I only feel 6/10 sick instead of 10/10, so that is a good thing. Headed to Kaiser tomorrow. Tried to make an appointment earlier, but the hold time was over 30 minutes. Guess I'll have to wait for night and weekend minutes to call my doctor. Sad.

Made it to the main halls of CES for a couple of hours today. It will be a few days before I feel back to normal from the food Thursday, but I am happy I got to see some of the main show. Unfortunately I missed the other excitement too. We had an inside track to the Adult Video News awards show tonight, and the guys are there now. I have a ton of pictures from the AVN show floor earlier today courtesy of Rob and my camera. Meanwhile, I had a third rate ham sandwich ordered in; and I am watching New Jack City on Spike TV. What an exciting Vegas trip I have had.

I am in Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show. Wednesday was a travel day. Thursday we registered and hit the Sands expo and the Alexis Park. CES is split among two convention centers and 2 hotels. The Alexis Park was all audio and a waste for our requirements. The Sands was mind boggling. An amazing array of products.

Thursday night we went to Bahama Breeze where I made a dining choice I would soon regret. Shrimp Linguini. Tasted fine, as did my Ultimate Pina Coloda. After dinner we gambled a bit at Treasure Island and the Wynn, then went to Tryst - a new nightclub. I wasn't feeling great, so I headed for the hotel about 1am. Shortly after I got there, all Hell broke loose with my body. For the next 12 hours, I vomited every 30 minutes like clockwork. I had my wife call Kaiser to speak with an advice nurse, and after 2 HOURS! on hold she diagnosed viral food poisoning. Let me tell you, food poisoning sucks. The guys brought me water and pedialite, but the pedialite tasted awful. They came back again with a couple of gallons of Gatorade (drank both immediately), some soda to settle things and a six pack of water. I haven't left my hotel room since late Thursday night, but I hope to get out today. I'm not sure I can handle walking the CES floor yet, but I would like to try.

We have been making the most of our time off this week. Last night we caught a Caps v. Boston game in the 103 section down by the glass. It was great seeing the game up close. Thanks Rhonda! Today we headed down to the American History museum (pic left), lunch in the sculpture garden and a brief visit to the art museum. We had to get back due to parking restrictions, but plan to finish the visit next Sunday before the Atlanta / Caps game. Tonight we are cleaning up the basement and paying bills. Tomorrow we have multiple Netflix movies to watch, some motrcycle work to do, and a bit of competitive bowling. Rhonda beat me two games last round, I beat her on the other two. I can accept being an equal in bowling.

I am selling my Netgear MP101 on Craigslist for $50 OBO if anyone is interested. The unit works fine, we just never use it. We will be using the proceeds to help pay for a new Sirius radio and subscription. We have been weighing the choice between XM (cheaper hardware and subscription for us) and Sirius (better programming - news, classical, rock, techno, etc). We haven't really chosen Sirius over XM yet, but we are leaning that way.

Merry Christmas! Hope everyone had a great Christmas holiday. We enjoyed the day at Westfields Brunch with Lindsey, Leah and Lisa. A quick check on the dogs, then off to Rhonda's parents and again to my sister's home. Highlights for me include Caps tickets for tonight (originally New Year's Eve), a wireless weather station, a motorcycle tank bag, a lock pick set on order, an Amazon box that failed to arrive (big surprise Amazon.com) and a myriad of other cool stuff. But it isn't about the gifts. Its about quantity. (just kidding).

This week looks to be fun and relaxing, playing tourist in DC, going to a few shows, bowling, movies, and generally hanging out. Crucial handed out generous bonuses this year along with $100 Best Buy cards which I used to buy a DVD burner for the computer. I have spent the last few days producing wedding and motorcycle DVDs. Awesome. So, if I don't see you this week, and you normally expect to see me, have a Happy New Year and we'll get together in 2006.

Looks to be a fairly busy holiday season. I have just returned from a number of planned and last minute trips across our great country, performing magnificent feats of network engineering and systemn integration. Some people know me only as Magnifico. Actually the trips are interesting, but nothing mind bending as of yet. Today I have a unit holiday party at a local Cajun / Mexican restaurant and bar. Very strange combination. Friday night my old college roommate is flying in from Denver to see some friends and family. We are having a little get together to shoot the breeze and some pool. Sunday is the the 10:30am Westfields WunderBrunch (c) bottomless champagne and buffet in the Palm Court. A new tradition as of last year.

Post Christmas Holiday, we have tourist trips into DC planned, including the American History and the Zoo which we haven't been to in a few years. My brother is bringing the entire family up from Mississippi to see what snow actually looks like. Two of the kids will be staying with Uncle Mike where I get to teach them how to handle my motorcycles, shoot my guns and pick up women. It should be a fun filled evening.

Rhonda's Christmas gift surprise was ruined when we both bought tickets for events on the same night - New Year's Eve. Rhonda picked up excellent Capitals tickets in section 100 of the MCI center for a 1:30pm game. Fortunately she was able to move the date of the game without a big hassle. I went to a ticket reseller for Kennedy Center Wicked tickets. Those were hyper-expensive and completely sold out for months. So, that is what we are doing for New Year's EVE. New Year's Day my sister will be recovering from having everyone over the night before; with a brunch and a 3:00pm Caps game. Hockey is back y'all. Time for some blood on ice.

Just got back from a few days in Arizona and a product demo. Interesting stuff. Most of our time was spent at Robeson's Mining World - a place in the middle of the desert full of old mining equipment, a former ghost town (transplanted) and a couple of abandoned mines. We did some hiking in search of the world's oldest cactus, but apparently just missed it. Took a helicopter tour of the area and captured some amazing pictures (coming later). Finished up with a round of shooting, including a fully automatic tommy gun, M-16, .357 Magnum and a .50 handgun that left my right thumb bruised after 5 rounds. Awesome. This is work?

Made it back in time for Rhonda's GMU Christmas party in Clifton, VA. An annual tradition. We had a great meal and a lot of fun. Rhonda is very appreciated in her work, and I received nothing but accolades for hanging on to her. I have my eye on a few professors, especially one particular Russian astro-physicist that may be making the moves on her. I think we are safe for now.

A couple of weeks ago I get a knock at the door. This friendly looking guy with a heavy Irish accent is waiting for me, and wants to discuss driveway paving. I have had two quotes on the gravel driveway, so I head out to chat with him. He goes on about what it takes to be a good paving company, and what a reasonable estimate would be on my driveway. I let him know that $4600 is about $2000 higher than one estimate, and $1000 higher than another; and I don't accept solicitations for business door to door anyway. He goes on his way.

Today we hear about this. Dodged a bullet there.

Remember at the beginning of the month, CNET got us all worked up over a $699 IBM T43 at Office Depot? Well, CNET has fixed the original story with minimal explanation from author Michael Singer.

Supposedly Lenovo (who now makes the ThinkPad) has struck a deal with Office Depot to sell the ThinkPad in retail stores starting at $699 - a 50% price reduction. Unfortunately, when my parents went to a local Office Depot on my suggestion - the manager knew nothing of the deal. This is true across the country. I can't get Office Depot corporate to admit to anything, and Lenovo apparently doesn't understand English well enough to respond to my email inquiries. I would email them a second time in Chinese, but somehow I don't think that will help. My last contact was with the Virginia Attorney General to report false advertising. Hopefully someone comes through for the consumer.

In other news, Sony has decided that it is a good idea to install root kits on your computer when you play their music CDs. Yet another reason to completely abandon the legitimate entertainment industry's products. Eventually they will have us back to the early 80s when all of my music came from tapes of friends' records and tapes. Buy one, copy a dozen. If they want my money, they'll quit f**ing around and start pricing music sensibly, embrace the mp3 format, and stop infecting our PCs with root kits. To Sony's credit, they have now bowed to public outrage and offered to exchange the titles at their cost. Not good enough. Don't pull this crap in the first place. Have some corporate responsibility.

Last night was a successful and enjoyable retirement party for Tom and Barbara Troutman (mom and dad) at Maggianos in Tysons Corner. We had a nice private room next door to a raging sweet 16 party. It was great seeing people that worked for CMS over the years - people I have known basically all of my life. Many toasts were made and a good time was had by all. Thanks for making their sendoff into retirement fun!

Made it safely to Detroit today. I don't really enjoy getting up at 5am to make a flight, but a coworker put it in perspective. He gets up at 2:30am to beat traffic and make is 1.5 hour commute. Someday we will have reliable transporter systems making life more enjoyable all around. Of course it just means we can be called into the office at 10pm without management blinking an eye :-)

On the (mostly Muslim) youth rioting in Paris:

Adel Benna tried to put himself in the shoes of his shy 17-year-old brother, Ziad, and two teenage friends who scaled a wall and leapt into the cables of a power substation last Thursday evening -- willing to face electrocution rather than the French police officers they were trying to evade in this impoverished Paris suburb. "Young people don't just throw themselves into an electrical current," Benna said Tuesday, his voice trembling in anger. "They looked behind them and saw something that made them so terrified, so desperate, they did it out of absolute fear. I hate the police. They are responsible for my brother's death."

Is that right Benna? Have you ever thought that thousands of volts killed your brother when he jumped before looking? Perhaps not evading the authorities would be a better course of action next time. As a friend recently told me, the main difference between a civilian and a law enforcement officer is that the LEO can use force to make you comply with what he tells you to do. Be that voice, hands, pepper spray, baton or gun. Don't run from police if you haven't done anything wrong; and don't expect to be coddled if you do run.

The street fighting less than an hour's subway ride from the heart of Paris has underscored France's failed efforts to stem the growing unrest within a largely Muslim immigrant population that feels disenfranchised and is beset by high unemployment and crime.

I know, I know, its a peaceful religion with just a few outsiders causing trouble. You can only push that cart so far.

Halloween is fast approaching, so we carved our pumpkins tonight. This is Rhonda's pumpkin to the left. Mine looks sort of like a retarded version of Beaker from the Muppet Show; or perhaps Bert from Sesame Street. While I was snapping pictures I got a shot of the ceiling texture pattern that we can't seem to replicate. If you know how to create this or this, let me know.

The rest of the night we played Crash Bandicoot. Enjoy the video.

Congrats to Barbara and Tom Troutman on their retirement! They have sold their business, Consolidated Maintenance, and are finally getting to relax. Well, they will relax soon. After 23 years of commuting downtown to D.C. after a previous 20 years in the military, it is time for a break and a vacation.

As for me, I am headed up to NYC for a couple of days for work. Nothing exciting. Not always fun, but always interesting.

Can't sleep. Clown will eat me. I have recently discovered sprintpimp.com and I have been enjoying making my own ringtones and downloading them for free. I use CDex to convert .mp3 back to .wav, then the Windows sound recorder to edit and save as 8000 KHz 8 or 16 bit mono. Then you upload and identify the file, and it is available for everyone to download. The site sends your phone a text essage with a URL to the ringer file. The only charge is Sprint's $.10 text fee. My wife doesn't have Sprint Internet access (called Vision) on her phone, but she can still download the ringers. I am sure I will grow tired of it quickly, but for now, I have ripped about 30 ringers and classic soundbites up to their site. They also have a bunch of wallpapers, but only about one in ten seem to work on my Samsung A660.

The electrican came through for us and wrapped up the shed Saturday afternoon. We now have power and lights out there; important for the upcoming time change and winter nights. Amazing how long it can take to run power to an outbuilding, and how useful it can be once it is there! We celebrated at dinner with Joseph and his wife Candace of Paradise Studios in Sterling, VA. A good time was had by all ;-)

What is it about inner city looting? A bunch of neo-nazis wanted to march through Toledo, OH. Just because you don't like the message doesn't mean they aren't free to say it in the US. So the mayor denies them a permit and they march on the sidewalks anyway. The ignorant in the inner city start rioting. "They let them come here and expect this not to happen?" said White, 29. Well, yeah Mr. White. It is probably exactly what the neo-nazis wanted you to do. And as long as inner city stereotypes continue to prove true, money will continue its flight from city to suburb.

Meanwhile, all of the deadbeats are rushing around filing for bankruptsy before a new law makes it harder to do so. Go ahead America, charge up debt you can't pay off, then shrug it off in court and start over again. Only a handful of you deserve protection, the rest should be tossed in the overflowing jails. Then you could march in protest and start a riot in Detroit. Personal responsibility ("I didn't do it!") continues to lose ground on a daily basis. If nothing is your fault, whose fault is it? Admit failure, learn from mistakes and move on.

Quick update. Just came back from Detroit Rock City, and it isn't as bad as you may have heard. It was, however, deserted. Traffic jams at rush hour lasted about 3 minutes. Few people roaming around. Perhaps everyone was home watching hockey. Anyway, I come back to 7" of rain in the DC area. My canoe was in the yard face up and full of water. Took an hour to siphon out to prepare for more rain tonight. Yeesh.

My electrical installer is about halfway done and getting a bit flakey. His work is sound, but he showed up two hours late to work last week, and didn't show at all Saturday, blowing my whole day waiting for him. He apparently doesn't have a phone in his new place yet, which is a bad sign, but since I still owe him $500, he is sure to show up sooner or later. Hopefully sooner, so I can put my shed and basement back in order. Sunday night we checked out The Flying Karamazov Brothers at George Mason. We were disappointed. I've seen similar juggling on street corners, and the corner guys have better diction. It was hard to understand much of what they were saying. What we did understand, wasn't all that funny. Perhaps early 30s suburbanites aren't their target audience. I was disturbed by the Iraq and war for oil jokes, they didn't fit the show, and are untrue to say the least. If Iraq was a war for oil, shouldn't we be pumping it by now? Wouldn't gas prices fall? These guys should probably stick to what they know best, but I'm not sure what that might be. We left at intermission. YMMV.

The weather has been fanatbulous lately. High 60s, perfect for riding to work, and still pretty cool in the afternoon for the commute home. I have been considering a day off just to ride and break in the new bike. Perhaps I will get a chance next week.
9-25-05 5:39pm
I guess the protesters were out in force in DC today. Mostly college students, easily whipped into a frenzy without understanding the situation. We headed down to Tysons to shop after the electrician failed to show this morning. A phone call a few minutes ago revealed that he will be here next Saturday instead. Can't argue with cost savings. Rhonda and I both picked up new Citizen watches with eco drives. No more batteries. I intended on just replacing my Blue Angels watch band which came off violently Saturday night, and wound up buying a new Blue Angels watch. Not very original I know, but the last one has served me well. Rhonda loaded up on shoes, returned others she had mail ordered, and we found a ton of great gifts for my cousin Chad's wedding next month. Unfortunately we can't attend :( due to late notice, but we wish them the best of luck in life and love.

A note about my latest media selections off to the left (linked to Amazon, but they don't pay me for the free advertising). The Mitnick book isn't particularly well written. My understanding is that the last sections are excellent, but so far (half way through) it is obviously directed at a much broader audience. Perhaps one that is much less technically inclined. Some of the social engineering situations are things I have not thought of before, but most are tired and well worn. We watched Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow last night. Interesting and creative film, but overall I didn't like it. Paltrow can't act with a blue screen to save her life. Much of the other acting was stilted, while the dialogue was weak. Direction was truly entertaining, but not enough to keep my attention. As for Drive Time Spanish, I ripped the lessons down to MP3 and listen to them at work on headphones. I am very, very slowly learning Spanish as I go insane. I won't be able to read it, but I'll know what they are saying eventually.

Geisha is having some trouble with her hips or legs. Not sure what the problem is, just tenderness around the hind quarters. Some whimpering and crying in the bed at night, but she seems fine walking and running in the morning. She has had two major leg surgeries which healed quickly. Hopefully it isn't related.

I am ready for the weekend to be here. I need to get over this cold. Sunday the electrician is installing power to our shed, and replacing the entire panel in the basement as an upgrade. $$$. I ordered a bunch of accessories for the SV, but I assume they won't be here in time for a weekend grease monkey fest. I'll mow the lawn, help clean the house, and maybe we can find something fun to do. Oh yeah, Denise is having a party at 4pm Saturday, so we do have something fun to do. Perhaps I can get Rhonda to ride the SV over with me. WooHoo.

Kaiser finally allowed me to pick up medication for this cold/sinus infection/pain in the ass. My doctor is great - he stayed until 8:00pm one night answering messages. Called me at home and discussed medication options without needing to come in for another visit. Of course, when I went in to pick up meds the next day, the pharmacist said that under the new procedures they don't actually fill the prescription until I get there. Way to waste more of my time. Why not fill it when it is called in, so I can walk in and pay for it without sitting around for 20 minutes? Is my time that invaluable to Kaiser Permanente? Is this why they take my number when I call, then have an advice nurse call me back?!? If it were 5 minutes, I might not complain. But FOUR HOURS later?!? Gimme a break. We have always said that Kaiser is a good HMO if you aren't sick, or if you are under 5 with normal childhood issues. Come to them with anything out of the oridnary (kidney stone, back pain, serious illness) and they drop the ball, running the other way.
9-19-05 6:52pm
Left work at 4pm feeling like total crap. This cold/flu will not let go. Kaiser says I am not sick, so it must all be in my head. Stopped by the local DMV to make the new SV650 legal. All I have left is the state safety inspection. Sometimes it goes fast, but if I have to wait for a Saturday to do it, I could be in line at the gas station for a while. It might be time to make friends with the local Suzuki dealership and get that second oil change out of the way along with an inspection. But that means leaving it overnight and Rhonda is at class tonight. So, I'll go walk the dogs, plop down to eat, then wax the bikes until she gets home. A perfect evening.
9-17-05 2:22pm
Bought the
sv650 today. Great deal, fun bike.

Bullying. 14% of teen students report they are the victims of it. This article describes how one school just will not tolerate it any more. But will bullying ever go away? To some degree bullying teaches kids valuable life lessons. It normalizes the herd, allows them to experience and fear violence, and learn to deal with stressful situations. Kids today seem to be so incredibly coddled by their parents and schools, I truly fear for their ability to deal with life's difficult reality. It is one thing to delay that reality; it is another to leave the kids completely unprepared to deal with it. Using red ink to grade papers is now considered too harsh for young minds. Use black ink to sooth the pain of failure. Sports trophies? Meaningless. Everyone gets one, not the top players. Riding the bench because you can't cut it? Unheard of. Everyone gets to play, even if they lose the game for the team. What kind of lessons are we teaching kids now? How will they lash out when they can't get exactly what they want, or experience their first taste of failure? Remember, the marketeers have been telling them since they were old enough to understand the words: they need the Nikes, Cadillacs, X-Box and Cell phones. They can't live without them. Advertising carries powerful messages, projecting a lifestyle that is unattainable to all but a select portion of the US population. When they can't attain the life the sitcoms and commercials tell them they have to have, how will they deal with reality? Can Mommy and Daddy follow them around in their twenties, protecting them from the bad stuff? I'm not saying kkids need to be treated like adults at birth, far from it. But let kids make mistakes and lear for themselves some of life's lessons. Thats what being a kid is about.
9-13-05 11:13pm
Friday I took off to prepare for rafting in West Virginia. This would be the 7th trip down the Gauley with ACE, and the 6th Upper Gauley trip. Unfortunately, I came down with something Thursday night. I drove to WV with Lindsey and Ted anyway, hoping for the best, but feeling the worst Saturday morning. They rafted without me and I am out $200. Sigh. Had a good time anyway. Sunday we made it back by 2pm to go to Leesburg and check out an SV650 for sale. Unfortunately the battery on the bike in question was dead, so we'll have to make the hour trip back out next Saturday for a test ride. We had to speed back home so I could pack and make a train for Philadelphia for a quick overnight with Crucial. Back again by 8pm last night and my laundry is finally done this evening! No more travel in the immediate future, which means I can catch up on several projects that have fallen by the wayside.

Brad and family are doing well in Mississippi. Power is back on which means AC and airing out the wet house. Contractors have taken over in the area, with plenty of work to be found. Hopefully everything gets back to normal for the quickly.

Who is responsible for the aftermath of Katrina? Only Democrats would politicize the issue this early in the rescue operation. MoveOn has already placed ads using hurricane victim footage to try and stop Roberts from becoming the next chief justice. Is everything just a photo opportunity for them?

Where does the blame fall? First, if you were able to get out of the city and did not, then blame yourself. This was a mandatory evacuation for a Class 5 hurricane. For those that couldn't afford to flee the city or had no transportation, I blame the mayor of New Orleans. Why not send the school buses out to collect people? Why not have some sort of plan in place before the inevitable? Next I blame the governor of LA for not requesting Federal assistance immediately. That is required before the feds can step in. Next I blame the FEMA leadership for not taking control of the situation faster, and having better options for shelter than commandeering luxury liners to house refugees. I hope that when the next 9-11 comes, FEMA is better prepared for housing and feeding a city population. Lastly, I blame Bush for not taking FEMA by the ear earlier. [soapbox]For God's sake, we have Mexican Army troops arriving on US soil for the first time since the 1880s to help with the disaster. I thank them for their help, but find it hard to believe that we don't have the resources to take care of our own. We do have a war on, but let's bring the National Guard troops home to do the job they signed up for.[/soapbox]

Goodbye Gilligan. You hated that you were typecast, but it gave you an easy ride.

One attention whore [Fonda] has cancelled her anti-war bus tour in favor of another attention whore [Sheehan]. How classy. There will always be another attention whore [Penn] to fill in the gaps.

Happy Labor Day everyone. We have been (and by we I mean the Royal We - Rhonda) has been cleaning the house like a mad[wo]man. When we came back from the beach, everything smelled like DOG. Sometimes it takes a little trip away to notice the smell. Anyway, the house is now de-stinked, with all new dog beds, carpet fresh, a whole house vacuum and dog baths. That should last about a week.

While on the topic of dogs, there is a tragic situation in the Katrina affected areas of the South, with thousands of pets dead or left to die in flood ravaged areas. The humane society is a great place to donate. They are doing everything they can to help the animals and to get them back together with their owners once things settle down. If animals aren't your thing, at least donate to the Red Cross. They will have months of operations to fund and can use every thin dime.

Also on the subject of dogs - how many of you have gone to a breeder for a purebred animal because you just couldn't head down to the local pound to find a companion? I would like to see everyone that gives a dog away or buys one from a puppy mill serve a day of duty in their local animal shelter, preferably helping to euthanize one of the 18,888,930 animals put to sleep in shelters across the US since Halloween of 2001. Please spay and neuter your pets. 571 pets are put to sleep every hour. 10 per minute. Insane.

When I was a puppy I entertained you with my antics and made you laugh. You called me your child and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend. Whenever I was "bad," you'd shake your finger at me and ask "How could you?" - but then you'd relent and roll me over for a bellyrub.

My housetraining took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. I remember those nights of nuzzling you in bed, listening to your confidences and secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be any more perfect. We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, stops for ice cream (I only got the cone because "ice cream is bad for dogs," you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.

Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. I waited for you patiently, comforted you through heartbreaks and disappointments, never chided you about bad decisions, and romped with glee at your homecomings, and when you fell in love.

She, now your wife, is not a "dog person" - still I welcomed her into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her. I was happy because you were happy. Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement. I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them, too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my time banished to another room, or to a dog crate. Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a "prisoner of love."

As they began to grow, I became their friend. They clung to my fur and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs, poked fingers in my eyes, investigated my ears and gave me kisses on my nose. I loved everything about them, especially their touch - because your touch was now so infrequent - and I would have defended them with my life if need be.

I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and secret dreams. Together we waited for the sound of your car in the driveway. There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that you produced a photo of me from your wallet and told them stories about me. These past few years, you just answered "yes" and changed the subject. I had gone from being your dog to "just a dog," and you resented every expenditure on my behalf.

Now you have a new career opportunity in another city and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your "family," but there was a time when I was your only family.

I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal shelter. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said "I know you will find a good home for her." They shrugged and gave you a pained look. They understand the realities facing a middle-aged dog or cat, even one with "papers."

You had to pry your son's fingers loose from my collar as he screamed "No, Daddy! Please don't let them take my dog!" And I worried for him and what lessons you had just taught him about friendship and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about respect for all life. You gave me a goodbye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and politely refused to take my collar and leash with you. You had a deadline to meet and now I have one, too.

After you left, the two nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move months ago and made no attempt to find me another good home. They shook their heads and asked "How could you?"

They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy schedules allow. They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite days ago. At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you - that you had changed your mind - that this was all a bad dream...or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared, anyone who might save me. When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated to a far corner and waited.

I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the end of the day and I padded along the aisle after her to a separate room. A blissfully quiet room. She placed me on the table, rubbed my ears and told me not to worry. My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come, but there was also a sense of relief. The prisoner of love had run out of days. As is my nature, I was more concerned about her. The burden which she bears weighs heavily on her and I know that, the same way I knew your every mood.

She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down her cheek. I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you so many years ago. She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein. As I felt the sting and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into her kind eyes and murmured "How could you?"

Perhaps because she understood my dogspeak, she said "I'm so sorry." She hugged me and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I went to a better place, where I wouldn't be ignored or abused or abandoned, or have to fend for myself - a place of love and light so very different from this earthly place. With my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with a thump of my tail that my "How could you?" was not meant for her. It was you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of. I will think of you and wait for you forever.

May everyone in your life continue to show you so much loyalty.

I am sure you all have heard about Katrina and its effects on New Orleans. My brother actually lives in Ocean Springs, near Biloxi, which was much harder hit. A 32 foot storm surge wiped out his office and flooded his home on the bayou. Family is now spread out among relatives. My employer, Crucial Security, is now offering a matching donation to Red Cross 1:1 for employees. As one of the founders stated, this may turn out to be the largest natural disaster in American history. The effects on the economy, fuel prices, heating oil this winter, shipping, trade, etc are going to be widespread and devastating. I hope the loss of life does not continue to rise. Property can be replaced.

I am in my SANS class, finding some interesting tidbits. For the most part it is information I already knew, but it is good to see it all combined in a formal class. The weather is holding up in VA Beach so far. Katrina flooded out Mississippi, including my brother's house and office. He has over a foot of water in his house right now; with his office completely wiped out by a 32' storm surge. Argh. At least they are all ok.

A teenager puts his sister in a washing machine and she dies. The mother sues the washing machine vendor and the whole affair is called a tragic accident. This is what is wrong with our country. The teenager is told it is ok that he killed his 5 year old half-sister. The manufacturer of the terrible machine is sued, because it is somehow their fault that a child was placed inside. Take credit and blame for what you have done, and don't pass the buck.

Forgot to mention my current project. I am hacking up a Palm III cable and USB cable to make a reader for the CVS one time use video camera. For educational reasons of course. For $20 (after rebate) I bought a decent throwaway video camera that runs on two AA batteries and can be read via USB with a little work. My solder skills are rusty, so it will be a week or so before I can finish the cable. The next project is the CVS red camera.

Back from Vegas again. Fourth trip since the Wilson wedding. This one, we spent much of our time in the middle of the desert. At one point it was 117F and 5% humidity. At least there was a breeze and we had plenty of water. Blackjack at the Hard Rock Hotel _sucked_. I should say that my blackjack playing sucked. Normally I can play and hour or two on $20. This time I lost $175 across four tables. Never more than I could afford to lose, but annoying just the same. No big jackpot this time. I did mention that I won $300 at Charles Town Races a couple of weeks ago didn't I? Half on a slot and half on the ponies. I guess my blackjack losses are just Karma.

Picked up a new weed eater Saturday. The old Homelite one wouldn't start and I had a neighborhood kid cutting the weeds for me. The new one makes the job 10 times easier. An Echo with gator blades and a long straight shaft. Easier on the back, even though it is a few pounds heavier. I spent about 7 hours in the yard Sunday after sleeping in until 1pm. My system clock is still screwed up from all the East-West coast time changes. Saturday night I stayed up until 4:30am, coincidentally the same time I came in Thursday night. Rum Jungle was rockin' at Mandalay Bay, so I guess the loss of sleep was worth it.

Travel, travel, travel. Off to Vegas again this week, returning a few days later, then back again next week. All for work. We need more work in the Bahamas. Looks like vegas.com screwed me on my last trip out. I bought the reservation insurance, but when I left a day early, I had to eat $240. Hoping for reimbursement. I came back from Vegas the last time to see that my AAA trash can is still sitting at the end of my driveway, waiting to be picked up since early June when I cancelled the service. Ridiculous. Tonight I have to pick up the VFR from service as well as the Accord, and drop off the Thunderbird for a couple of maintenance items. The credit card overlords are quite happy with me lately.
7-26-05 6:35am
Made it on time to Vegas. My internal clock is all screwed up. East Coast is 9:35am, I woke up around 3am. Dinner was at midnight. Why are all of these hotels so noisy upstairs? I know Vegas is a 24 hour party town, but come on people. When you get up to your room, do you have to slam the doors and rearrange the furniture all night? I am staying at the Mirage which is a little tacky, but decent enough. The walk to Caesars is only a few minutes through hoards of tourists. I need to find some coffee and a bagel.

Jane Fonda is an irrelevant bitch trying to become relevant. If she had been properly hung as a war criminal 30 years ago, this wouldn't be an issue.

The Fall Gauley is coming. Maybe I really will drown this year. Probably not.

Holy Crap this summer is flying by. Seems like it was just yesterday that the power company came and cut off my friends' power without notice. Oh wait, that was yesterday. Seems NOVEC needs a lesson on 'last resort collections'. No phone call, no letter, no idea they owed any money. Thankfully, I listened in the Cub Scouts, and had a generator for the evening.

I am headed to Vegas next week, then possibly Massachusetts for 3 days, out West somewhere for a week, then God Knows Where. Hopefully it cools off soon. Yesterday in a drive back from Charlottesville, VA, the Accord started dumping large quantities of water on our feet for no apparent reason. A clogged drainage tube seems to be to blame. Not reason enough to sell the #3 car and buy something new. Yet.

7-8-05 12:30pm
Recycling is piling up at the curb thanks to our new trash company 5 Star / American Disposal. They seemed to have suddenly changed pick up days a couple of weeks ago without telling us. Since we just replaced AAA (worthless) with them, I'll give it a couple of more weeks. Speeking of AAA, they STILL haven't picked up their old trash can and recycle bin after I cancelled last month. I have seen them skip neighbor's trash / recycle pickup twice since we cancelled. Karma goes around for companies too. Eventually.
7-1-05 10:28am
A new month, and I am ready for it. Had drinks and dinner with a few friends last night that I haven't seen for years. They have all grown up, with kids and jobs and moves around the world. Good to see.

Ready for the big party on Monday. Headed to pick up beer and drinks at lunch today, then I'm off for the long weekend. Happy 4th!

6-26-05 10:43am
Friday night found us and the Sanitas at a Nationals vs. Blue Jays game. My new company has season tickets, and I was lucky enough to snag a set Friday morning. We were an hour late to the 7:05 game, as 2 hours just isn't enough time to get home, take care of the dogs, get back to metro and ride in. We would do more in DC if events started at 8pm instead of 7pm.

Looks like some low life thieves broke into Nats players cars while they were on the road. What exactly is security doing at RFK? It isn't in a very good neighborhood. Not a place you would walk around at 2am normally. I originally thought RFK was fine, why build a new stadium. But it has been 10 years since I was there, and it is a dump. Overcrowded hallways, dangerous stairs, little parking, etc. But the game was great and the fans are true.

Today we are off to the wine festival in Old Town Manassas. $20 gets you 8 wineries with tasting, snacks, crafts and music. I think. Rhonda planned this whole thing, I'm just an active participant.

6-20-05 8:29am
Phew - 20 hours of driving this weekend on mind numbing 81. It is good to be home. The reunion went well, we enjoyed it. It think we are finally leaving the Gatlinburg Brookside Resort for good. 30 years of reunions, and they haven't maintained it. I would prefer having it somewhere else entirely. Gatlinburg isn't the greatest destination. How about a nice beach? Or campground?

We hiked the Smokies for a bit on Saturday. A very short section of the AT, a little over a mile up and down. It was a great day for it. 80 in Pigeon Forge, 76 in Gatlinburg and 67 on the trail. Coming home Sunday, we completely screwed up and forgot to check out of the hotel when we left. It wouldn't matter much in a modern hotel with plastic keycards, but this place has stamped brass keys and probably would have charged us for every day until they got them back. So, we drove an hour back. We planned to be home by 6:30 or so last night, and got in just before 10pm. I could use a vacation.

6-10-05 11:53pm
Busy week. LeoLiz Landscaping came and worked over the yard completely. Edged and mulched all of the trees and beds. They also dug a 100 foot trench for power to the shed. Tonight I buried most of the conduit and cable, with a few feet at both connection points waiting for tomorrow. In two weeks we are having a number of trees planted in the front and back yard. 4 evergreen screens around the pond, a red plum and full moon maple in the back fora shady sitting area. Just in time for the 4th of July BBQ party. eVites should go out in the next few days.
6-1-05 9:35am
I switched over to yum from up2date today. After upgrading from RH9 to FC3, up2date started working again. I was a subscriber to the RHN, but they disabled it for all but their enterprise customers. Cheesed me off, I was happy to pay the fees for frequent auto update. Anyway, for whatever reason up2date worked just fine after the upgrade. Looks like it was because it didn't recognize my login. Stupid me, I went and ran the registration for rhnsd today and broke the updates. Now I have swapped over to yum, which is performing just as well (or better) than up2date. With the added benefit of being able to upgrade the entire distribution, not just one package.
5-27-05 12:43pm
I fully intended to note the date 052505, then I got busy at work. Looking forward to the 3 day weekend. Cut the lawn, work in the yard, BBQ, maybe even go for a ride. I cut the back yard last night for the first time in 2 weeks. Took 2.5 passes to take care of the hay. So much rain is good for the garden, but it sucks for mowing.
5-20-05 4:18pm
While poking around today, I found a copy of the bible in txt (1.4MB) and thought it was interesting. Download and unpack the zip file and it will create an old and new testament directory with each book as a separate text file. Use it for whatever you like. I used it to add to a larger cracker dictionary for generating password hashes. The one I created is almost 60MB uncompressed and is in tar gzip format, 18MB.

Have I mentioned Donnie Darko yet? Rhonda and I wantched it for the first time last weekend. I really enjoyed it. So much so that I added the Director's Cut to Netflix for this weekend. Unfortunately, it would seem that my postman is stealing my movies as they go out, since Donnie Darko is still in Limbo after a week in the system. I'm hoping the director's cut can clear up a few things for me. It will probably just make the whole story murkier. Check it out if you haven't already.

5-20-05 1:25pm
Happy second 29th birthday to Leah Wilson. See you at Hooters Saturday night. I don't have to explain that statement.
5-20-05 9:43am
Gentle reminders : If it is over 70 degrees, you will kill your dog if you leave him in a hot car. I will then put you in the hot car with his body and leave you there for a few hours. If you are old enough to walk around a neighborhood on your own, you are old enough not to throw your trash on the ground. If you have a dog that keeps getting loose, do something about it. Don't ride off road vehicles on the streets. If you have kids that do it, stop them. That is your job as a parent. If your kid can't drive and is dangerous to your neighbors, get him driving lessons. Pick up your dog poop, especially in my yard. That is all.

Yard Sale Saturday 8am to 1pm. Be there or be square.

5-12-05 8:55pm
Regular paychecks are coming in now, and we are back on track it would seem. I can get to work in 45 minutes, and home in the same if I drive offensively. Good enough.

This weekend we are heading in to the city to see the Emersson String Quartet at the Natural History museum. Sunday - if the weather holds - dad and I are going fishing. Time to break out the canoe and hit the nearest decent lake (Brittle) and enjoy the weather. And a few beers.

5-10-05 9:25am
I am slowly getting back up to speed after this RC3 upgrade from RH9. They stopped putting imapd in the package - which broke imapd, squirrelmail and pop3. Stunnel broke with a hwcrypto package and SSL was completely hosed on a client box. Now I am fixing htdig (database too big?!?!) and looking for other stuff.

At work I am a man without a home. The space I am sitting in was just changed and I have to get out. I'm trying to move next door which is completely empty, yet somewhat dark and lonely.

Congrats to my aunt Sharon's nephew Kenny Chesney on his marriage to Renee Zellweger this weekend. Any time you want to fly us all down to the islands for the weekend, we are available ;-). I know Sharon and Phil are thrilled to death as they love Kenny very much.

5-6-05 9:39am
Oh well, I am paying the $200/hr iLand fees to get to my system and upgrade it Saturday. Fortunately a client needs the same thing done at the same facility, so they will split the fees with me. And since this box is in Tysons Corner, the upgrade puts us in prime location for a nice dinner out.

Traffic had me completely frustrated when I got home last night. My commute is only about 12 miles, and theoretically should take 20 minutes. But Rt. 28 is so completely f*&#ed up that is took an hour 15 in dead stopped traffic to make it home. That is completely miserable on a bike, with left hand cramps from clutching. Fortunately it wasn't 95 and 90% humidity, but it will be soon enough. I used to LOVE my commute through Clifton to Reston. It backed up for 5 minutes in the morning in Clifton, but otherwise it was 45 minutes of great motorcycle back roads. At night it backed up for 15 minutes in Clifton, but once again, it was workable. This commute has no usable alternate routes that would take less than an extra 45 minutes to use. I would love to kick the Fairfax County planner that used lights at the 28/66 interchange, as well as approving the dozens of lights along the corridor. Eliminate the extra lights on 28 and use more access roads like the smart communities do. I have people in my office coming in from Maryland that make it in less than an hour!

5-5-05 12:52pm
Well, welcome to 5/5/5, numerically an interesting day. Or not. Whatever. I need to upgrade this box and my co-lo provider iLand wants like $250 an hour for the pleasure of letting me into the cage and watching me work. Do any other co-los charge to let their clients get to their equipment? We are negotiating a lower price. I wish I didn't have to go into the cage at all, but I have a major upgrade I just can't do remotely, even on Linux - without a major risk.
5-2-05 9:08am
This weekend I changed the oil in the bike and Accord (both 1997 models) then washed all of the cars. I hadn't seen red on the bike for many months. I had noticed a loose taillight on the VFR, and upon further inspection, I was missing one screw and had a cracked bit of plastic on the right rear grab handle mount. Super glue does wonderful things.

Sunday was spent in the yard, and I have to say it looks pretty good. Mother's Day plans include an afternoon BBQ with all of the families (hopefully) attending. Say no to the rain gods.

4-21-05 4:03pm
All is well. The rain is finally washing some pollen out of the air. I came in early and skipped lunch, so I can head out a bit early tonight. We are either bowling or grocery shopping. Bowling is my choice, but we do need food in the house, so we'll see.
4-20-05 8:58am
Day 5, all is well. Except for the smell of cooked fish in the Mens' room. Ugh. Happy Birthday Barney Gumble! April 20th, same as Hitler. Does Germany deserve a Pope after WWI and WWII? Sure they waited 1000 years, but what is a few hundred more?
4-19-05 1:05pm
Suspicions confirmed. Geisha has a varient of bordatella. The vaccine only covers one type. Doh. She sounds pitiful, but should bet over it in a week or so. In other news, we have a new German Pope. The Great Olive or something similar.

In business news, offshoring is getting bad reviews in a recent study. 70% of respondents had major headaches with outsourcing, while 44% didn't see any significant cost savings. Not to mention the negative imagery of moving our US service jobs overseas. If we give up manufacturing and outsource services, there isn't much left guys.

4-19-05 10:15am
Getting into the groove of research and testing. By next week, I should feel pretty normalized. Geisha is at the Vet this morning with Rhonda. She woke us up at 4am coughing up a storm. Probably allergies from her walk last night, but it sounded pretty bad. She recently had all of her vaccinations, including bordatella, but since we had her boarded two weekends ago, better safe than sorry. The Vet is right by my office, but they wouldn't board her for the day so Rhonda had to take off of work and see to her. She has leave, I have none. Thanks for taking care of my dog Rhonda!
4-16-05 11:24pm
Some spammer at bp7.net has been trying to relay off of my server. Spamhaus DNS filters caught it before mail had a chance to reject it. Pushing 300 attempts per hour for several hours. They are now soundly firewalled off just to be sure. Get your own bandwidth porn spammers!

We caught Fever Pitch this afternoon at Potomac Mills. It was a cute date movie, nothing memorable. Picked up a bunch of perennials for planting tomorrow. Hope the last of the frost is over, we have a garden to grow!

4-15-05 3:27pm
dccycles.com is back online. Has been for weeks, I just forgot to tell you. I also fixed a nasty bug in the Apache config that was allowing www.dccycles.com to work, but dccycles.com pulled troutman.org.
4-15-05 2:31pm
Yesterday I got a good look at my future office space. Very nice. The cube is only temporary it would seem. The new space is still being built, and I have a beautiful view of the woods and grounds of Westfields, not that I plan on getting to look out of the window very often ;-). My mind was blurring as I met a couple of dozen people, but I am starting to pick up on names and faces. I have spent today doing forms and setting up email. I am just about done with the admin stuff, and about ready to get my hands dirty. Hopefully I can get the other stuff out of the way monday, set up my new laptop and get rolling.
4-14-05 10:43am
I had forgotten how early 6:45am is. Especially since I haven't gotten up that early in about 8 years. Hopefully I can shift my hours to 8:30 to help with traffic. I am in my first cubicle ever. A big change from Wheat - looking out on green fields. The only green I see now is in my SSH client! I'll get used to it I am sure. Everyone here has been very friendly so far..
4-12-05 9:53am
I am back to fully employment. My new position is with Crucial Security in Chantilly, Virginia; working on network engineering projects. My first day is Thursday. Woo!
4-12-05 12:55am
Made it back from Vegas in one piece. Overall a great trip. On the first night, I won $400 on a dollar slot machine after the 10th pull. Dave won $400 on the same machine 2 hours later. Blackjack went pretty well at first, up $50, then down $150 overall. Mandalay Bay is an incredible resort. Huge and self contained. Walkways made it easy to hit Luxor and Excalibur without going outside in traffic. Highlights of the trip included a trip to see Wayne Newton and a walk around Freemont Street, which had a disappointing light show (in comparison with the Viva Las Vegas light show on Freemont 6 or 7 years ago). Wedding was great and we all had a lot of fun. An hour in the Vegas sun by the wave pool left me crispy despite sun screen. Our last night we witnessed the Luxor moth phenomenon. It was amazing to see millions of moths attracted to the light, and swirling up in a vortex. Wild. 5 hours of sleep and we caught an 8:30am flight straight back to Dulles, picking up the dogs a little late from their Country Club Kennel home. Now it is time to crash.
4-7-05 6:50pm
Viva Las Vegas! We are off in the morning.
4-5-05 2:55pm
I stopped by Wheat's new building at 7830 Backlick in Springfield. The building has seen better days, but it has a good amount of room for them. I offered consulting time to do some web and mail work and they accepted. Titan also emailed for some more consulting time, which means more gambling money for Vegas this weekend.
4-2-05 4:32pm
While I was toiling in the yard the pope passed away. The USSR didn't get him, but father time did. He is the only Pope I have ever known. I am not Catholic, but just the same...
3-29-05 1:02am
The dccycles.com domain will be in limbo shortly, so I have added http://www.troutman.org/dcc/ as a content alias until the domain name issue can be worked out.
3-29-05 12:33am
Finished with the wedding negatives today. That was a chore - well over 1000 negatives. They barely fit on a CD after running them through Photoshop. I have packaged them up for family, and they will be in the mail tomorrow, along with images from the 1960s slides.

Tomorrow (today really) I am cutting over Wheat to their new co-lo rack space. Hopefully it goes smoothly. Wednesday I get to till the muddy garden (it has been raining since Friday!) and start planting Spring crops. I am looking forward to it. Thursday, I have a follow up interview with a security firm in Chantilly. Since they are probably reading this, I won't say anything more than that.

3-25-05 9:37am
I finally bought a scanner with a negative feeder and slide option. I recommend the Epson 2580 to anyone who has a large pile of negatives they want clean digital copies of at fairly high resolution. I spent a few hours scanning 35mm negatives from our wedding, with many hours to go. Last night I picked up 10 boxes of 35mm slides from my dad and had a great time scanning in old family pictures like the one to the right here. This is my mom, brother and sister in Hawaii in the late 60s. They lived in Honolulu while my father worked at the Coast Guard base. Good stuff.
3-24-05 11:00am
Yesterday Brad's family, my dad and I all headed to the Udvar-Hazy Smithsonian museum near Dulles, VA. I am now obsessed with the Corsair and Mustang fighter planes. After the museum, I had a good interview with a security company in Chantilly, VA. More consulting work today, and I hope to find a good slide and negative scanner for a little side project.
3-22-05 10:18am
Today my brother and his family are in town, headed to Harper's Ferry, WV for the day. I am wrapping up some consulting work and have another job fair at noon. I have one job opportunity doing a one year contract on 1099, but I haven't decided to take it yet. It pays fairly well, but isn't the best fit. Still thinking about it though. Last night I was able to move DNS for Wheat to a hosting service, and have their sites running on one system now. Employers ask me why the company websites are still up if they are going out of business, and I have to explain that they are down to minimal staff (3-4 people) and still trying to find work. My AVP title is more of a problem than a benefit in my field. My work was almost all hands-on, but in most companies an AVP just manages others.
3-21-05 5:27pm
Zipp was fired from Playgirl for being a Republican! What a sad day when your political affiliation can determine your employment eligibility. Way to take the high ground liberals!
3-20-05 11:30pm
Today was a good day. Nice brunch of Eggs Benedict, followed by Constantine at the Potomac Mills theater. The movie wasn't great, even though sick-boy gave it a 7. It was odd. And halting. Like you might expect Keanu Reeves to be in any movie. Keanu plays a sort of devil hunter in a heaven vs. earth conflict revolving around the quest for his soul. Special effects weren't enough to save it, and they were pretty good. It didn't help things when one of Woodbridges' fine residents sat down next to us with their 3 year olds - 20 minutes into the movie. The husband boyfriend's cell phone went off twice during the movie. Genuine Class. This is a gentle reminder to the lesser virtue teens of Prince William County - use protection. You don't want to end up at R rated Sunday afternoon matinees with your man of the week and a couple of rug rats at 18. And I don't want you there either.

Now of course, I am typing away near midnight. I have a couple of interviews planned this week, and my brother Brad is driving the Fam up from Mississippi for the week. He is a pediatric cardiologist in Ocean Springs, MS with four boys. I hope to take them riding when their parents aren't looking. Someone has to teach them to cuss and drink. Actually, I don't really drink much. Compared to some friends, I hardly drink at all. One friend gave up 7 and 7s for lent. Really.

The server transition to iLand went very well. My bash script automated the cut over at Wheat and shut the system down by 1:15pm, coming back up at its new home at 2:30pm. Looks like I might get a little consulting work from Wheat to move them to iLand as well.
3-7-05 2:14pm
I took a "clear my head" ride today for a couple of hundred miles. Throughout the solo ride, I hit Nokesville, Warrenton, FR, Middleburg, etc. Many of the roads were left in excellent condition this Winter, with a few exceptions. The road that runs from 55 to Middleburg (changes names several times, called Halfway at one point) has several large patches of road acne. The scarring is so severe, I'm afraid this road may never get a prom date. In addition, the "screw up your line" debris is a combination of sand, crushed stone and tons of gathered salt. Mostly in the corners of course. I'd give it a pucker factor of 3 out of 5.

On Italian reporters in Iraq : Italian agents likely withheld information from U.S. counterparts about a cash-for-freedom deal with gunmen holding an Italian hostage for fear that Americans might block the trade, Italian news reports said yesterday. That would help explain why American troops opened fire on a car whisking the released hostage to a waiting airplane, wounding Miss Sgrena and killing the Italian intelligence operative who had just negotiated her release. Of course, it could just be that she is a reporter for the Communist daily Il Manifesto. When you pay ransoms, you encourage more kidnappings. Didn't Italy learn anything from Spain?
3-3-05 9:20pm
Mitre open house went well. Very nice people, and several opportunities for me. I have an interview scheduled for Tuesday with an educational software company which sounds promising. Hopefully lots of side work in the mean time to keep me busy!

This server will move to its new home on 3-10 at 2pm. I'll pull the plug around 1pm and hopefully it will be back by 2:30pm. Can't afford to miss an email, neither can my email hosting clients.

3-1-05 8:07pm
Employer calls have been fairly quiet lately. Seems to be some interest that is slow to interview. Fortunately, I have a fair amount of contract work presenting itself. I only home the contract work and interviews don't collide.

Come next week, this server will be moved from 209.120.170.19 to 69.64.173.60 at iLand Internet in McLean. I think I am all set with DNS and configuration modifications. My fear is that the big job offers will roll in during the hour I am out of service. I only hope their mail servers retry!

[from /.]American Library Association president Michael Gorman is not too fond of bloggers and blogging. '[The] Blog People (or their subclass who are interested in computers and the glorification of information) have a fanatical belief in the transforming power of digitization and a consequent horror of, and contempt for, heretics who do not share that belief... Given the quality of the writing in the blogs I have seen, I doubt that many of the Blog People are in the habit of sustained reading of complex texts. It is entirely possible that their intellectual needs are met by an accumulation of random facts and paragraphs.'"

I have a random fact for you Mr. Gorman. Your name is about to be eternally linked by search engines to something very, very bad.

No luck on the job front just yet. Many phone calls and pseudo-phone interviews, but no suit and tie sit and sweats yet. I do have a few promising items on the horizon, with salary well above my last position, and large bonuses. We'll see.

My MaMaw (grandmother for you Yankees) is in the hospital with chest pains. She was picked up by an ambulance at a restaurant Friday night. We went to visit her today, and she looks better than she sounded. Hopefully she can get out of there soon. After the hospital, we headed to the new local Wegman's grocery store which had a backup on to the local highway, and police directing traffic. I can not believe the residents of Fairfax are so starved for a quality grocery store that they would wait in line just to park. We headed to the older Wegmans near the airport which was only marginally less busy. Hosting a dinner party Tuesday, and we needed a quality store for our fish and cheese. Sometimes Giant and Shoppers just doesn't cut it.

I just realized that I have been running stunnel with a locally generated SSL certificate with smtp and pop3 for my desktop clients, but I never went in and made an SSL webmail gateway. Well, that is fixed. If you are a troutman.org mail user, use the mail link above instead of the old bookmark you probably have.

I have a line on a few hosting companies. The first one is in at $150 per month. I'm hoping to get this other one down to $100 per month. I need co-lo rack space for this little Dell server. I host 4 sites, 2 commercial and very low bandwidth, plus their email. I'm trying to add two more commercial clients from the soon-to-die Wheat network. If I do that, I can charge them $50 each and actually profit. Most likely though I will charge them $25 each and break even. All I want is my continued free space for personal web and email. I want it on my box which is basically on auto-pilot with an uptime around 40 weeks. Linux rocks.

Happy Birthday Rhonda! I know my wife is stressed out over the recent job loss, but on the bright side she is now the big bread winner! I'm trying to stay positive, which is easy with all the support friends and family have given me. I have submitted my resume to over a dozen excellent job opportunities in my immediate geographic area. Mostly thanks to the good riders at dccycles.com who are always there to help one another. I should soon be on the road to a new position; hopefully at my current salary or better, in a place I enjoy working. Thanks everyone.

Well, here is a shock for me. After 10 years with Wheat International the company is closing its doors to all but a skeleton staff, which doesn't include me. If anyone is looking for a linux/cisco network engineer, email me at my gmail address. My resume is available in word and acrobat formats. I don't know how long this troutman.org server will be up - it is hosted at Wheat International until I can find a new provider. I have shut off the ftp-http gateway (/ftp/pub/*) to reduce bandwidth.

I'm sick of all the gmail postings on craigslist and other forums. You all have fallen victim to a wonderful marketing scheme. Google generating false demand with an invite only system, and it works. Hell, I even migrated my public contact email to mtroutma_at_gmail_dot_com. If you want gmail, email me, but remember there is nothing special about it and it isn't worth anything. Now if you want to check out a cool Google offering, have a peek at maps.google.com.

The FLU sucks. Rhonda and I have been out since 2-2. I am back at work today, but I'm not going to make it the whole day. Really wish I could have picked up a flu shot this year. Argh.

I just added the wedding pictures back to the website. I love igal. I just dumped over 600 images up, ran igal and had a nice slide presentation in under 60 seconds.

The snow came and went, the DC area received a few inches, well short of forecasts. The wind today is ridiculous, knocking me out of bed this morning with freight train whistles through window screens. We are headed to the gym after a nice couple of waffles at home. Yesterday we hit a local bistro for brunch - eggs benedict for me (mmmmmm). I introduced my mom to my old scanner, and she is now happily plugging away at old family photo albums.

Netflix is pissing me off a bit lately. Several of the movies I want to see are in 'Very Long Wait' state now and they don't seem to be getting any less popular. I'm considering a switch to one of the other DVD mailing services if this keeps up.

My giant color Konica 2300 printer showed up on Friday. $299 for a color laser 16ppm at 1200x600. An awesome deal. We have one at work which was $799 new - the only difference being the work version has an LCD readout and built in NIC. The home model is USB or Parallel. This printer is huge. The footprint is like a small copier and it weighs over 60lbs, but the price is right and quality is great. Consumables are a little bit pricey, but most home users shouldn't find that a problem.

Happy Inauguration President Bush. F the protesters out there in force today. I hope they freeze their nipples off.

Geisha is recovering nicely from her surgery. Rhonda was nice enough to take her to surgery Tuesday, then pick her up and stay home with her yesterday. I slept in the family room with her last night, and am staying home today. Her back right leg had a torn ACL (just like her back left leg had last year). The surgeon goes in and reshapes the bone so that she doesn't need her ACL to walk normally. The scar is pretty gruesome. I'll post some pictures when it gets to oozing.

One inch of snow seemed to shut down all DC area highways and back roads yesterday. I was let go at 4:30pm, and made it home just after 6pm (a 45 minute ride usually). I took it easy even though I drive a 4wd truck. The powder created huge ice slicks that weren't fun to brake on. HOWEVER - you people that come to a dead stop on a steep uphill grade; or go 1 mph down any grade need to be taken out and shot. If you don't know how to drive in snow, don't.

Sunday found us bowling with Dave and Tiff. We actually had to wait 15 minutes for a lane; the joint was PACKED. I came in 4th the first round in the low 100s, and first in the second round with 140s. I think I am getting better. Not a lot, but better. Monday we went to DICK'S and looked at running and bowling shoes after our workout. I found a cheapo pair of bowling shoes. White, leather, and no one else has worn them; which is important. We tried to buy a couple of bowling balls there, but the finger hole driller was out to lunch, literally. Instead we went to K-Mart and bought a pre-drilled ball that fit me very well. Why wait when what you want is on the shelf?

Just returned from the Cycle World DC Show at the DC convention center. Good show this year, very similar to last year's show. Great for people watching, but a little too crowded to spend any real time with the bikes I love. The vendor displays were decent, but geared more towards the cruiser market. Lots of guys wearing their colors, including a handfull of Hells Angels.

"Females among many insects and animals, including humans, enjoy receiving gifts during courtship, but a new study on flies reveals that males can woo their intendeds with worthless, fake love tokens, even if such cheating is otherwise undocumented for the species. By the time the female fly realizes her lover is a cheapskate and beats him off with her wings, the male already has mated with her and leaves with his faux present to find another partner."

Tonight as I was making my way through Clifton traffic, I had a garbled cell call from Rhonda. I tried her back, but her AT&T phone has poor coverage on the back roads. I called the house to find a message from her that she had a flat tire and needed help. I turned around and found her car - right where I had passed it 15 minutes earlier and not recognized it in the dark! We managed to install the spare, but it was at 30PSI on a required 60. It limped to a gas station a few miles away where thieves recently broke into the air machine rendering it useless. We had to take the flat tire back home, patch it, fill it, and take it back out to swap it for the flat spare. Not the evening we anticipated, but all is well.

I have just added DynDNS support locally and a Java / Javascript applet for the local cam software serving the dogs at home. You can now watch the dogs LIVE although the image may look static. They don't do much during the day.

I found the torrent for tsunami videos today, and I have made a local mirror for anyone that hasn't seen them. I hope you have given to a supporting charity to help the victims. I only hope the post flood disaster is not worse than the tsunami itself.

I woke up this morning to 60F sunshine and a light breeze. If this is global warming in Virginia, I'm fine with it so far. We had close to a million small birds across the two front bird feeders. Actually, one is a squirrel feeder, but the birds eat the mess dropped by the squirrels. Two geese were honking loudly at each other in the pond while a third watched from the driveway. I'm not sure what he was doing over there. I don't think he knew either.

Happy New Year! We met Dave and Tiff at Carmellos for New Years Eve. The 7/7s were tasty and Champagne dry. It is a strange 65 outside today, so I will be working in the yard until the big dinner this afternoon. Happy Holidays!
